Fibre Broadband

Fibre Broadband is a new type of broadband which uses fibre optic cables to help increase the speed of your broadband connection. Also referred to as ‘Superfast broadband’ or ‘Next Generation broadband’, with high connection speeds it will offer greatly improved digital service for all.

Up until recently the majority of broadband connections in Ireland have been using telephone lines or mobile networks to bring internet into our homes. This has as we all know been quite a journey. Frustration at slow speeds or regular dropped connection at peak times from excessive downloading was normal.

The Government is committed to ‘Superfast’ or ‘Next Generation’ Broadband. The last number of years has seen the roll out of Fibre Broadband so instead of sharing information with existing cables Fibre Broadband is transferred along special cables underground.

These signals move a lot faster than they do along traditional copper cables and offers speeds of up to 240Mb.

A modern network of fibre optic glass cabling runs from your local telephone exchange, sending data at the speed of light. Unlike standard broadband your speed isn’t affected by how long the cabling is. Because standard broadband sent electrical signals over copper telephone wiresit simply meant the longer the copper cable is, the slower the speed. As the fibre optic cables are laid alongside the existing copper cables, homes and businesses decide which one they would like to use.

Dedicated Fibre Broadband Modems are needed for this new service. Older ones supplied for standard Broadband Service will no longer work. Thankfully most Broadband Providers will install it for free as part of a 6 or 12 month contract. An engineer will call to your home and ensure you are setup correctly and happy that it is all working right for you.

You can expect speeds of up to 50Mb with a regular fibre-optic connection. If you have an FTTH (fibre to the home) connection, the fibre-optic cables run all the way into your house and this is how you get the faster speeds of up to 240Mb. Most of the larger urban areas in the country now have this facility.

Eir’s Unlimited Broadband No Phone

What Makes eir’s Unlimited Broadband No Phone Different to Regular Broadband?

A popular marketing scheme that most modern internet service providers are taking advantage of is packaged deals. You know those ones that you see on the TV or on the flyers they post through your letterbox. They promise you a hundred and one things (usually TV channel) in addition to your internet access. They seem like fantastic deals. After all, for just a little more than what you pay for your internet, you could get things bundled in such as TV channels, a landline, mobile phone stuff and sometimes even accessories like a landline phone.

With eir’s unlimited broadband only package, you get superfast broadband internet with nothing more and nothing less. You can, of course, choose to add some extras such as mobile internet or TV essentials, but the draw of eir’s unlimited broadband without phone is in the savings you make and the fantastic speeds.
